Message from the Acting Dean
Our Faculty academics conduct research in areas as diverse as Curriculum Studies, Inclusive Education, Social Justice, Early Childhood Education, Rural Education; Curriculum Delivery, Educational Management and Governance, School Development, Teaching of Gateway Subjects, Dysfunctional Schools, Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, Policy Analysis, and Teaching and Learning Technologies. We offer programs, ranging from undergraduate degrees (Bachelor of Education) to post-graduate degrees (Bachelor of Education Honours, Master of Education, and Doctoral programmes)
Our initial teacher education programmes are designed with the intention to develop teacher proficiency, competence, and empowerment to meet the requirements and the demands of the profession and become engaged citizenry. Our programmes prepare professional teachers who have the theoretical knowledge and understanding, combined with practical skills, competences and commitment that enables them to teach in ways that comply with the highest national and international standards.
The Faculty offers initial teacher education programmes with a special focus on the General Education and Training (GET) and Further Education and Training (FET) bands:
1) A four-year Bachelor of Education degree (B. Ed) with the following specialisations:
Foundation Phase- prepares student teachers to teach in Grades R – 3
Intermediate Phase- prepares student teachers to teach in Grades 4 – 6
Senior Phase & FET which prepares student teachers to teach in Grades 7 – 12.
2) Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)- prepares graduate students to teach in Grades 7-12
Post-graduate degrees (Hon, M. Ed, Doctoral)
Postgraduate provides in-service teachers with more advanced learning in a specialised discipline 0r sub-discipline.
The B. Ed (Hons) degree aims to deepen graduate students’ knowledge in these broad fields:
Mathematics, Sciences, and Technology Education
The Faculty offers Masters’ Programmes by coursework ( and Mini research report), and by dissertation only. The coursework Masters is aimed at providing qualifying students with knowledge and skills that will enable them to function as critical-reflective, competent and accountable education practitioners. The dissertation only Masters is aimed at providing students with knowledge and skills to serve as researchers.who can contribute to the creation of educational knowledge at an advanced level.
The Doctoral Programme requires students to undertake research at an advanced academic level culminating in the production and acceptance of a thesis. Students are guided by committed and expert supervisors to acquire and demonstrate high-level research capability and make a significant and original academic contribution to the field of Education.
