Prof M Maphalala
Mncedisi Maphalala is a Professor and the Dean in the Faculty of Education at the University of Zululand. Prof Maphalala is an established researcher who has edited two books and two journal special issues and published a number of book chapters and research articles in accredited journals. Prof Maphalala has presented research papers in various local as well as international conferences. His research interests are curriculum studies, assessment, teaching practice and Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.
He currently serves as the Deputy President of the Southern African Society for Education (SASE) which has organised an annual conference since 1971 in various SADC countries. In 2015, Prof Maphalala was a Visiting Scholar at the College of Education at the University of North Dakota in the United States of America. As a postgraduate supervisor and mentor, Prof Maphalala has supervised to completion Masters and doctoral candidates and continues to mentor Post-doctoral fellows.
As an academic citizen, he has participated in a number of academic activities outside the university as an external examiner, conference session chair, panellist in academic discourses, National Research Foundation (NRF) reviewer and keynote speaker. In addition, Prof Maphalala has conducted a number of large scale commissioned research projects by external organisations such as South African Institute of Distance Education (SAIDE), Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) and National Research Foundation. He currently serves on the Umalusi Research Forum, a sub-committee of Umalusi Council on a four-year term.
